Bhojpuri at a Glance

Bhojpuri is an Indo-Aryan language and spoken by more than 4 crore or 40 million native speakers in India alone. Apart from Western Bihar, eastern UP and nort-western part of Jharkhand it is also spoken in Nepal, Bangladesh, Guyana, Suriname, Fiji, the Caribbean, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica,  South Africa and Mauritius. It is recognized as national language of Nepal.

Initially Bhojpuri was written Kaithi scripts but since 1894 Devnagri script became the primary script to write Bhojpuri language.

Bhojpuri Cinema:

It is said that the first president of Indi Dr. Rajendra Prasad, who hailed from Bihar, met Bollywood actor Nazir Husain and asked him to make a film in Bhojpuri which eventually led to release The first Bhojpuri talkie film, Ganga Maiyya Tohe Piyari Chadhaibo in 1963.
Bhojpuri film industry is now approx Rs 2000 crore industry.
